Why were debit cards not accepted before now?
Things in the cannabis business have been a little tricky when it comes to processing payments due to the longstanding federal regulations. While cannabis may be perfectly legal for recreational and medicinal use in the state of Oregon, most banks are federally insured. Therefore, many have taken the safe route of avoiding legal woes by not allowing customers to use their debit cards to pay for weed.
Thankfully, where there’s a will there’s always a way, and many workarounds have been implemented, so dispensary customers can pay for cannabis as they do other purchases. Primarily, innovation with the use of third-party payment processing companies has made it possible for these payments to be possible, which makes life easier for anyone shopping for cannabis.
How do debit card payments work at the dispensary?
No major changes! Your checkout process will just mean you have more options once your budtender rings up your purchase. If you’d prefer to pay with a debit card, just say so—you now have that option. We simply use a third-party payment processing service to accept the payment. Additionally, this process is safe and secure because it is handled via a trusted encrypted process.
Can you pay for your purchase with a credit card?
Unfortunately, not yet. While there are workarounds in place we can use to accept payments with debit cards, we don’t have the same liberties with credit cards. Credit card companies have even more stringent rules in place to be mindful of government regulations. Therefore, until the federal government makes changes (hopefully soon!), credit card payments at any dispensary will likely not be possible.
