What Does 420 Mean?
While many people believe that the term 420 was originally a police code for marijuana-related crimes, the true story of how the three-digit number became a moniker for weed is a bit different.
Five high school students in California learned of an abandoned weed crop in their area, and the crew developed a plan to search it out. They decided to meet outside of their school at 4:20 in the afternoon to start their treasure hunt. While they were never able to find the abandoned weed, they did begin to refer to cannabis as 420, and the term caught on fast. Soon, people throughout the state of California—and throughout the country—began using the numerical term as a synonym for weed.
